New Blog

Posted in Blogging by Chara Meredith on 7 July, 2009

For the last month or so I’ve been thinking about a new blog that I wanted to  set up. What should it be about? What would I write? What would it be called? What Should it look like? Is there a domain name available? Where will I host? These were some of thee thoughts going through my head over some weeks, but the ultimate question that keep coming back was – will I succeed?

Hard work and patience are not virtues that come easily to me, and so, as with many of these adventures into blogging that I have taken, I run  the risk of losing sight of the goal and becoming discouraged by failures – large or small.

Don’t worry, I really do want to succeed at this, but I’m making decisions in what Dr Scott Peck calls ‘the agony of not knowing’. I realise that there isn’t particularly any potential for a personal blog. I have way too many interests that I would want to talk about – and reading through the experience of Darren Rowse at ProBlogger has helped me confirm this. Truly, who wants to read the self-gratuitous ramblings of millions of people (myself included)? :)

So, it was with these things in mind that I set out to discover the what, where, when and how of a new blog for me. A run through a number of scenarios to begin with – like writing quite formal book reviews, and all that would entail (reading books I’m not necessarily interested in :P ) to writing a number of posts on topics/items of interest that have cropped up while reading a book & when finished the book writing an overall synopsis/review. It sounded like a winner.

I thought I’d hit the jackpot on the niche I wanted to enter, but about a name? Book Reviews? Thoughts on Books? Thoughts? Musing? I thought I’d hit jackpot again on Musing – only to find that Musing.com is taken, doh, of course. On further investigation, I found that bookmuse.com is also taken for a site that reviews books, no less! How discouraging, with none of the URLs I liked available, I was back a square one. It felt like this was the end of the adventure on this, and My Exploration – also felt like it was at the end of its adventure. But I have persisted, and I will let you in on the blog when it is launched, which I hope is soon – I’m sure it will be soon.

31DBBB – Day 1: Elevator Pitch

Posted in Blogging by Chara Meredith on 7 April, 2009

I joined up to ProBlogger’s 31 Days to Build a Better Blog challenge which started yesterday. YAY for new beginnings! Day 1 focuses on creating an Elevator Pitch for your blog. To begin with I thought that this would be fairly difficult for me, as I haven’t really defined what my blog is about. I have, sort of, but it is still really broad and doesn’t focus on a specific topic or theme. I wrote up my Elevator Pitch this morning and realised that that’s not true. I have a distinct theme, I just haven’t focused on it all the time. Anyway, here is my elevator pitch.

Life is both a journey and an exploration. Life is often depicted as a journey, where we are travellers on the road sometimes taking the wrong one, or being lead off the path by different things, but life isn’t just a journey, it’s an exploration. We are here as travellers to be sure, but we are also here as explorers of our world, and our meaning in it. This blog is an expression of what is happening in my life, on my journey, and the results from some of my exploration.

Funny

Posted in Life by Chara Meredith on 22 January, 2009

Fail is a blog that posts a whole heap of photos and videos that are episodes of people attempting to do things, and failing. It is quite humorous unless of course you have done something like this before.

I had to post about it, you see, because of the Best Failboat evar? post, it is the coolest registered boat out there, you have to check it out.

Books, Blogs and Lists

Posted in Books, Internet/IT by Chara Meredith on 15 September, 2008

I was having a look around the web, and found climach, who has four lists of books on his blog apart from his blog-posts themselves. These are:

1. To read and re-read

My life is richer for having read these, probably several times.

2. Worth reading at least once

These books affected me strongly, but I’m not sure if the affect would be the same if I’d read them at a different point in life. I’d recommend them to many people, in many situations, but not for everyone.

3. Maybe worth reading

These books may have been enjoyable once, but only once. Or maybe they had some value, but weren’t to my taste. I don’t necessarily regret them, but I won’t read them again.

4. Not worth your time

I can’t imagine recommending these.

I think it is a brilliant idea (so in the near future you may see some pages added to this site).

In addition to his lists climach’s blog ‘The Desert List: Memory reviews – mostly of books’ has a set of guidelines by which posts are written:

These are memory reviews. The purpose is to examine how books affect you after thorough digestion, not after first consumption.

Guidelines:

  • No reviews within the first year of reading.
  • No exact quotes.
  • No checks for accuracy.
  • I like the idea of thinking back on books after a year has past to see if you still think the same way as when the book was fresh in your mind.
